Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID)

The AECID is defined in the Cooperation Law as the state agency attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation, responsible for the promotion, programming, operational coordination, management, and execution of Spanish public policies for sustainable development, humanitarian action, and education for sustainable development and global citizenship.

AREAS OF ACTION OF THE AECID

Cooperation for Sustainable Development

The AECID works in key sectors such as health, education, water and sanitation, gender, the environment, and agriculture, among others, to promote sustainable development in partner countries.

Humanitarian action

The Agency provides assistance and support to vulnerable populations affected by humanitarian crises, natural disasters, or conflicts, with a focus on early response, rehabilitation, and prevention.

Education for Development and Global Citizenship

Promotes awareness and commitment among Spanish society to global challenges, encouraging an informed and committed approach to international cooperation.

GOALS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

STRATEGIC PLANNING

The agency actively participates in defining priorities and developing instruments for Spanish Cooperation, under the political direction of the Secretary of State.

OPERATIONAL COORDINATION

Within the framework of the Master Plan, it coordinates cooperation carried out by the Spanish system at headquarters, regional, and country levels to achieve effectiveness, complementarity, and coherence.

ALLIANCES

It promotes agreements and frameworks for action with other cooperation actors.

The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) is one of the key players in official Spanish Cooperation. As such, the institution manages part of the total Official Development Assistance (ODA) provided by Spain.

The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, together with its partners, works in more than 30 countries through its network of Spanish Cooperation Offices.
